Pregnant with twins

Pregnant with twins

We had been trying to get pregnant for a couple of months when I finally saw the desired two red stripes on the pregnancy test. I was over the moon. When during an ultrasound scan I was lying and staring at the screen which showed something that I was told was my uterus (it looked so vague that, for me, it could be anything in the world) for a few minutes (or were they seconds? Time is a tricky thing when we’re stressed) there was silence. And then the doctor, with a suspicious smile on her face, pointed two fingers at me as if in a victory gesture… I knew at once what she meant and I was thrilled. We hadn’t got a history of twins in our families, so it came as a huge surprise. Yet, I wasn’t panic-stricken but strangely peaceful. As if it was the most natural and obvious thing to happen.

Double trouble?

In glossy magazines and on TV we’re shown attractive pregnant celebrities having the time of their life and we expect the same. Then, most of us sadly realize how wrong we were in our expectations. Being pregnant with twins is not what I would call ‘the time of anybody’s life’; not the woman’s and, definitely, not the husband’s ;) With the third month the morning sickness started. In the books they tell you that, as the name suggests, it bothers you in the morning and that the third month is the time when such symptoms usually go away. Wrong again! I felt nausea all day long (with varied intensity if that’s any comfort) and it lasted for another 4-odd months! But I wasn’t complaining because it was exactly what I wanted. I was pregnant at last. Reminding myself that it was only a temporary situation and that the reward was to be two loving creatures I knew I could stand a lot. Yet, sometimes logic fails when you can’t recognize your face in the mirror (swollen!), you can’t eat, can’t sleep at nights, can’t wear your favourite shoes because your size is 39 and not 37 anymore… But at least you don’t have to put them on yourself;) (actually you can’t, because of your protruding belly).
